Job Description

The Cherokee Mental Health Institute (CMHI) in Cherokee, Iowa, is seeking an energetic and forward-thinking Administrator of Nursing (AON) to direct its Nursing department.
About The Hospital
CMHI is an acute-care psychiatric hospital under the umbrella of the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS) serving the entire state of Iowa.  The hospital is licensed for a total of thirty-six (36) beds, twenty-four (24) of which are designated for adults and twelve (12) of which are designated for children and adolescents.  The hospital serves approximately 400 people annually and admits patients as young as seven (7) and adults of all ages.  CMHI is accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC). 

The hospital shares its campus with several other human service operations including the Civil Commitment Unit for Sexual Offenders (CCUSO), Targeted Case Management, Child Protective Services, Cherokee County Juvenile Court Services, the Youth Emergency Services (YES) Center, the Center Against Abuse and Sexual Assault (CAASA), and the Jackson Recovery Synergy Center.
About The Position
The AON is responsible for directing and supervising ninety (90) employees including nurse supervisors, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, nurse clinicians, resident treatment workers, and an administrative assistant.  The AON sits on several committees including Hospital Leadership, Medical Executive, Performance Improvement, Staff Development, Safety, and the Employee Relations Team.  The AON reports directly to the CMHI/CCUSO Superintendent.
The successful candidate for the AON position will have experience and a thorough understanding of the following:

  • Compliance with TJC, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and other applicable standards and regulations

About The Community
Cherokee is an Iowa city of approximately 5,000 located in Northwestern Iowa.  For a smaller community, Cherokee offers amenities often found only in larger cities, including a regional medical center, a wellness center, a community theater, a dedicated school district, golf course, miles of walking trails, seasonal and annual festivals, city and county parks, and much more.  Nestled in the beautiful Cherokee Valley, the community boast a rustic yet thriving downtown area  and offers several restaurants, shopping opportunities, and services.  Cherokee is located within one (1) hour of Sioux City and is two (2)  hours from Omaha and Sioux Falls.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Nursing and experience equal to four years of full-time supervisory/management nursing experience;

graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Nursing and experience equal to two years of full-time progressive nursing supervisory/management experience;
graduation from an accredited college or university with a Doctorate degree in Nursing;
an equivalent combination of the required education and experience, substituting one year of full-time experience for thirty semester hours or equivalent of education; no substitution for four years of full-time supervisory/management experience.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator's Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
