Assistant Director for Undergraduate Advisement

Southern Illinois University Carbondale invites applicants to apply for the Assistant Director for Undergraduate Advisement position. This is a term, full-time, 12-month academic professional appointment. The Assistant Director for Undergraduate Advisement will report to and assist the Associate Provost for Academic Programs with the oversight, management, and support of centralized academic advisement.  The Assistant Director will collaborate with the chief academic advisors to provide leadership to the university advising community, which includes all aspects of student-centered undergraduate advising from first-time enrollment to degree attainment. The position requires the ability to manage multiple initiatives, establish and meet deadlines, and to advance a collaborative relationship between academic advisement and all constituencies served by academic advisement.

Essential Administrative Responsibilities:

  1. Promote an inclusive environment where all students, faculty, and staff are valued, supported and respected.
  2. Maintain current knowledge of the institution’s academic programs, curriculum, practices and academic and student policies.
  3. Possess a working knowledge of the various types of student financial assistance programs.
  4. Assist with the development, assessment, and continuous improvement of on-line training modules for advisors.
  5. Serve as a liaison between the APAP and academic advisors.
  6. Coordinate monthly meetings for academic advisors and chief academic advisors.
  7. Serve on committees affiliated with advancement of or requiring the involvement of academic advisement.
  8. Provide the APAP and Chief Academic Advisors with updates on policies and procedures in enrollment management.
  9. Provide an annual report of academic advisement that includes outcome assessment of advisement and continuous improvement as well as changes in undergraduate degree programs.
  10. Provide academic advisement with up-to-date resources needed for student success.
  11. Serve as a resource on advisement for colleges and academic programs.
  12. Coordinate with Student Affairs and Enrollment Management areas to ensure accuracy of advising materials distributed to students, faculty, and staff.
  13. Responsible for assuring that all websites related to the Academic Advising Center are up-to-date.
  14. Support program and university accreditation activities, including gathering and interpreting assessment data.
  15. Assure advisement adheres to data management protocols and HR policies.
  16. Other duties logically associated with the position as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: A Master’s degree is required. Applicants must have ten years of experience in academic advising. Applicants must also have experience with training and/or oversight of academic advisement staff (Chief Academic Advisor or similar position). Must be technically proficient in all platforms used by advisement at SIU (electronic document management system, program audit system, and student information systems). Applicants must have experience in advising students from multiple majors.

Preferred Qualifications: Applicants with experience working collaboratively, cooperatively, and effectively with diverse populations and strong oral communication skills are preferred.
