POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Assistant Professor of Practice/Assistant Lecturer/Assistant Instructor (50% FTE) (Data Journalism and Analytics)

Position: The School of Journalism in the College of Mass Communication and Media Arts at Southern Illinois University Carbondale seeks qualified applications for a fifty percent (50%) term, academic year appointment as a non-tenure track assistant professor of practice, assistant lecturer, or assistant instructor in the area of data journalism and analytics.

Minimum Qualifications: An academic degree in a relevant field is required as follows: for appointment as assistant professor of practice, a doctoral degree; for appointment as assistant lecturer, a master's degree; for appointment as assistant instructor, a bachelor's degree. For all applicants, five (5) years of post-graduate professional experience in data journalism and/or analytics is required. Applicants holding only a bachelor's degree must have relevant professional tested experience such as progressive reporting experience in regional or national news outlets using statistical analysis, big data collection, computer-assisted reporting, data visualization, crowdsourcing, computational science, and network analysis; regional or national awards, prior evaluated teaching experience. For appointment at any rank, skills must include news writing, news and/or sports reporting, multimedia journalism, and/or investigative reporting in a digital environment.

Responsibilities: The selected individual will teach courses related to data journalism and analytics and will contribute to a curriculum emphasizing integration of advanced analytic techniques. Typical teaching expectations for this part-time position are two courses per semester.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage with students in a School of Journalism that houses an independent student newspaper, as well as Broadcast Journalism students from Radio, Television, and Digital Media who run a news report broadcast on the in-house public television station, WSIU.

College: The College of Mass Communication and Media Arts offers undergraduate programs in The Department of Cinema and Photography, The School of Journalism, The Department of Radio, Television, and Digital Media, as well as graduate programs through the doctorate. The College also houses WSIU Public Broadcasting, which operates PBS and NPR member stations. Effective Date of Appointment: Appointment begins January 1, 2019, and runs through May 15, 2019. Appointment may be renewed dependent upon availability of funds.
