Program Coordinator (Chief Flight Instructor)

Description of Position: The College of Applied Sciences and Arts (ASA) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is seeking qualified applicants for an anticipated position with ASA's Aviation Flight program. This is a 12-month term, Administrative/Professional appointment.

Qualifications: Earned bachelor's degree in Aviation, Aviation Management, Aviation Technologies, Transportation, Public Administration, Human Factors, Psychology, Education, or related field. Three years experience in a FAR 141 setting. Must be able to conduct FAR part 141 check flights and meet FAA proficiencies listed below:

  1. Candidate must have logged the following minimum times:
    1. 2000 flight hours PIC with 100 flight hours in simulated or actual instrument conditions.
    2. 3 years of flight training experience with at least 1000 flight hours of dual instruction given, or less than 3 years of flight training experience with at least 1500 flight hours of dual instruction given
    3. 2 years of instrument flight training experience with at least 250 flight hours of instrument dual instruction given, or less than 2 years of instrument flight training experience with at least 400 flight hours of instrument dual instruction given.
  2. Candidate must pass, within a reasonable period of time, the chief flight instructor proficiency test on instructional skills conducted by an FAA inspector.
  3. Candidate must possess the following ratings: Commercial or ATP certificate, instrument rating, CFI, CFII.

Responsibilities: Certifies training records, graduation certificates, stage and final test reports and recommends students for pilot certificates and ratings in compliance with FAR Part 141. Conducts FAR 141 proficiency flights of faculty and staff instructors. Supervises faculty and employees engaged in flight and ground instruction. Prepares, updates or supervises the preparation of flight instruction syllabi and course materials including FAA Training course outlines. Conducts knowledge and flight stage checks of flight students in compliance with FAA regulations. Teaches in the Aviation Flight program, as appropriate. Supervises the aviation maintenance shop and line service functions in the Aviation Flight program. Provides annual evaluations of flight faculty and shop staff to the Department Chair. Responsible for maintaining a positive program relationship with the FAA FSDO, the TSA and the local air traffic control tower. Maintains the certification requirements of the flight training devices in accordance with FAR Part 60. To engage in research/scholarly activities at the department, college and university levels. To engage in other duties as determined by the Department Chair.
